Positions in the team

Positions and roles in the team

The rugby union team consists of fifteen players on the pitch at one time while having eight subs you can replace the people starting on the pitch. The rugby team is split up into two sets of players, the forwards and the Backs.

The forwards

The forwards or the "pack" have the main responsibility of gaining and retaining the possession of the ball. In these responsibilities, it includes the scrum and the line-out. (which will be explained in a later blog) they also have to attack the line with the ball to make their way to the opposing teams try-line. they also have to defend the opposing team when they don't have the ball.

The backs

The backs are generally smaller in weight but not height and are usually more agile than the forwards. The role of the backs is to create alternative scoring options to the forwards. The usually achieve these options by creating and doing set moves that fix and confuse the opposing defence.

 The  captain

The captain generally speaking is usually a forward but doesn't have to be. The captain’s role in the team is not only to be a leader but has the important role in the rugby match that he is the only player allowed to talk to the referee. So it is his job to make sure the referee is seeing all of the happenings on the pitch and if the referee is not seeing these happenings it is his job to tell the referee to look out for them so his team is not getting done wrong to them.

Rugby's continents and country's Rugby is played in a wide range of countries and continents stretching across the globe. last year it was recorded that there are 6 million people around the world who play rugby. with 18000 clubs. Rugby was first as I've said before was played in England and then expanded to the home nations of Ireland England and wales. Rugby first reached mainland Europe in 1862 in France when the British went there and set up the first club. And just a year later the first game was played outside Europe in Argentina in a game with the city banks playing against each other. Then the first game was played in Sydney new south wales in Australia. But the first game wasn't played in New Zealand until 1970. Rugby in North America never really cached on until 1927 where there was a university game.

Laws of rugby

Laws of rugby The laws of rugby are quite simple when you look at the game in a vague way, but the rules do go quite in depth as you look further into the game. The most basic rule of rugby is that you can only pass the ball backwards or flat. This means that if you pass the ball forward or drop the ball in a forward motion it is a scrum to the opposing team. The scrum The scrum occurs as I said before when the ball drops or is passed in a forward motion or when a maul is stoped for a period of time. A scrum is where the two opposing pack push against each other in sort of a diamond formation while the scrum half put the ball in and the two forwards at the front of the scrum have to contest for it. These two forwards are called hookers because they hook the ball with there foot back to their side of the scrum
